Thinking Of Buying An ATV? Follow This Checklist First.

Blog

ATVs are fantastic vehicles. They can be used for work or play, and they're a lot of fun to drive. If you've never ridden an ATV before and you're considering buying one, there are a few things you should consider. Here are four steps you should take before purchasing your first ATV.

1. Take an ATV tour.

Before purchasing an ATV of your own, you should make sure you enjoy ATV riding. An ATV tour is a cost-effective way to try it out for yourself with minimal risk. An experienced guide will teach you the basics of ATV driving. As an added bonus, you'll get to see some local sights you might have otherwise missed by skipping the tour.

2. Do your research.

An ATV is an investment that can last a long time if you take proper care of it. Before purchasing your first ATV, you should do your research to find one that matches your goals. You'll need to choose a type of ATV first, and you'll probably be choosing between a utility ATV and a sport ATV. Sport ATVs are more suitable for riding over rough terrain, while utility models are great for covering large areas of ground while hunting or farming. Sport ATVs typically have more powerful motors. There are many brands that offer both types of vehicles, including Polaris; do your research to discover which brand is right for you.

3. Purchase safety equipment.

ATVs are a safe mode of transportation when driven correctly, but you should still take precautions to protect yourself in case of an accident. Purchase the safety equipment you'll need to wear while riding. At a minimum, you'll need a helmet and a thick jacket that will protect you in the event of a fall. Choose a motorcycle style helmet with a full face shield to protect your eyes. A heavy-duty leather jacket is suitable to protect your skin from road rash, so you should buy one if you don't already own one.

4. Set aside time for practice.

Unlike cars, ATVs don't require any type of license. However, there is still a learning curve involved when driving. Be patient with yourself and realize that you'll have to practice before you get good at steering your vehicle. It's a good idea to make sure your first few rides are easy trips on gentle terrain. You can tackle more complicated maneuvers later once you've built up your confidence. It's better to start slow and avoid the possibility of a crash or injury.
